Stafford County finalized an agreement Wednesday night for its Technology and Research Park
The memorandum of agreement leads to the county leasing classroom and conference space at the Quantico Corporate Center from the Silver Cos. for five years at no cost.
Bill Freehling wrote about the initial version of the agreement there, and described the goals of the research park:
“The county and its academic and business partners would offer high-tech classes geared toward the defense and other government contractors located near Marine Corps Base Quantico.”
The vision is for a research park focusing on the defense and intelligence communities. Academia, government and the private sector would collaborate to educate the workforce and conduct cutting-edge research that could attract corporate investment and well-paying jobs.
The final memorandum of agreement, between the Board of Supervisors, Economic Development Authority and the Quantico Business Center, does not list an actual cost amount on the five-year rent agreement.
“We didn’t want to have an amount of money attached to the amount of space, at least 3,000 square feet for five years,” Supervisor Paul Milde said. Previously, Silver Cos. had agreed to pay $315,000 toward the cost of the lease. “We wanted to make sure that no matter what happened to the price per square foot over the next five years that we were guaranteed that space,” Milde said.
The area will be rebranded as the Stafford Technology and Research Park at Quantico Corporate Center.
“It really shows everyone coming together, a shared vision, which is really the most exciting part of this,” Milde said.
The University of Mary Washington is already teaching two classes in space at Conscious Security Inc. A ribbon cutting could be held at the end of the summer.
